The original Resident Evil game received a remake in 2002 and is seen by many as the ultimate way to experience the game. Luckily for us, Capcom answered our prayers and remastered a lot of the original franchise and even completely remade a few of them from scratch in order to ensure that both long-time fans and newer fans of the series could enjoy the games for years to come. The Resident Evil series has been around since 1996 and, as a result, a lot of the original games are difficult to find and it’s even harder to find a console to play them on. So strap in and lets see if the S.T.A.R.S team can survive their first of many encounters with Umbrella. Throughout October, I have taken it upon myself to return to one of my favourite video game series of all time, playing through every mainline entry of the Resident Evil series from games one to seven. Anybody could sit through a scary movie, but could just anybody survive the Spencer mansion? Survival horror games are the ultimate test of nerves and skill in a market saturated by tacky horror movies and sub-par slashers. These games would often rely on resource management and the constant threat of danger and failure as opposed to the jumpscares we’re so accustomed to in 2020. But what do we mean by survival horror? The genre has seen a lot of change in recent years, but back in the 90s when it was making its first appearance on the video game scene, the main objective of a survival horror game is simple survive. Survival horror video games have been around since the 1980s, but the term wasn’t coined until 1996 when Capcom released what would come to be known as the pinnacle of survival horror as a genre, Resident Evil. As someone who has seen almost every horror movie under the sun, it’s easy to get bored by watching attractive people getting run down by a killer in a mask all the time, but how else are you supposed to get that incredible adrenaline rush brought on by the horror genre? It’s October, folks, which means that it’s officially spooky season! The best time of the year for those of us that love a good scare.
